Thalassaemia is an inherited blood disorder caused when the body does not make enough of a protein called haemoglobin, which is required by red blood cells to transport oxygen throughout the body. If you have been diagnosed as a Thalassemia carrier, your future partner should also be tested. This is important because if both of you are carriers for the Thalassemia gene, the chances of your child having the disease i.e. Thalassemia Major requiring regular blood transfusion is as high as 25% in each pregnancy.
