What is an Audiometry Test?
An Audiometry test is a hearing assessment that measures how well you are able to hear different sounds, tones, and frequencies. It helps detect early signs of hearing loss and evaluates the sensitivity of your hearing.
At our centre, we use the Pure Tone Audiometry (PTA) method — A standard and reliable technique used to assess hearing thresholds across different sound frequencies.
Who should consider an Audiometry Test?
You may consider an Audiometry test if you:
- Frequently ask others to repeat themselves
- Struggle to hear conversations in noisy environments
- Experience ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
- Work in a noisy environment (e.g., construction, manufacturing, aviation)
- Are above 40 years old and want baseline hearing screening
- Require hearing assessment for employment or routine health screening
Early detection allows timely management and better hearing health outcomes.
How does an Audiometry Test function?
Our test uses Pure Tone Audiometry (PTA), where you will wear headphones and listen to a series of tones at different pitches and volumes. You will be asked to respond whenever you hear a sound.
For basic health screenings, we measure air conduction only. This assesses how sound travels through the ear canal to the inner ear.
For full diagnostic tests, we assess both:
- Air conduction – Measures overall hearing ability
- Bone conduction – Uses a small device placed behind the ear to evaluate how sound travels directly to the inner ear
Testing both air and bone conduction helps determine whether hearing loss, if present, is conductive, sensorineural, or mixed in nature. The test is safe, non-invasive, and typically takes about 15–30 minutes.
How do I prepare for my Audiometry Test?
- Avoid exposure to loud noise for at least 12–24 hours before the test
- Inform our healthcare team if you have ear discomfort, infection, or excessive earwax
- Bring along any previous hearing test reports (if available)
- No fasting or special preparation is required.
